A guided tour to the best waterfalls in Bohol that changed my perspective

As a backpacker, I usually enjoy exploring on my own, but I must say that this tour to the hidden Bohol waterfalls completely changed my impression of guided tours. Not only were the groups small, but there was also a professional driver and guide. Throughout the journey, there was no sales pitch or additional service charges, which left a lasting impression on me. And let me tell you, these waterfalls are far from ordinary tourist spots- they are truly hidden treasures known only to locals! I consider myself lucky to have found this experience.

Dipping in nature’s harmony

During the Bohol Waterfall tour, I was reminded of the trip I took years ago to Banff National Park, where I visited the iconic Lake Louise in Canada. Though waterfalls and lakes are different, their crystal-clear waters immediately put me in a state of relaxation amidst nature! This journey felt like stepping into a natural wonderland straight out of a movie. Every step closer to the waterfalls left me amazed by the surrounding natural landscapes. However, what truly captivated me were the natural waterfalls hidden deep within the jungle, making it an adventure worth starting on when visiting the Philippines.

Ingkumhan Falls

Firstly, after about a 1.5-hour drive, passing through lush greenery and various trails, we finally arrived at Ingkumhan waterfall. Located in a serene valley, the water flows directly from high above, creating a magnificent curtain of water. Here, there was a swing and a spot where you could cliff jump. I couldn’t wait to take off my shoes and dip my feet into the extremely clear water, feeling its peaceful embrace. Standing beneath the waterfall, I felt overwhelmed by the power of nature, with only my fellow travelers around me! Truly! We experienced an incomparable sense of peace and harmony… This was truly a hidden gem. I even had a chat with some residents on the way back to the van, who shared stories about the land, making me appreciate this adventure even more.

Pahangog Falls

Next, we headed to Pahangog waterfall. More majestic than Ingkumhan, its waters flowed swiftly and powerfully. Surrounded by towering trees and lush greenery, it created a refreshing and exhilarating atmosphere amidst the magnificent mountain scenery. Standing by the waterfall, gazing up at the towering water column, I felt its grandeur and splendor. Without hesitation, I jumped into the water, enjoying the sensation of it washing over me. While playing in the water, local children approached us, greeting us and sharing interesting facts about Pahangog waterfall. They explained how even in the summer, it maintains its unique semi-circular feature, with the water slowly flowing down the hills and rocks, forming three small streams. Before we left for our next destination, they even taught me some fun hand-splashing techniques, it was so much fun!

Dam-Agan Falls

Finally, we reached Dam-Agan waterfall. Located in a peaceful valley, its beauty was truly enchanting, with clear and gentle waters. I gently waded into the water, feeling a sense of joy and peacefulness as I merged with nature, a feeling I had never experienced before. I learned that “Dam-agan” means “falling” in Visayan (Visayan is a subgroup of the Austronesian languages spoken in the Philippines), and Dam-Agan waterfall was named for its steep and narrow path, which could pose a risk to travelers.

Essential tips for Travelers

  1. Waterproof Bag for Electronics: Ensure to carry a waterproof bag to protect your phone and other electronics from water damage. This is especially useful for capturing memorable moments without risking your devices.
  2. Dry Bag for Wet Clothes: Pack a dry bag or storage bag for your wet clothes post-adventure. This will help keep the rest of your belongings in your backpack dry during your return journey.
  3. Sun Protection: The sun can be particularly strong in tropical environments like Bohol. Wear a sun hat for additional protection against the sun, especially during the midday hours when UV exposure is highest.
  4. Appropriate Footwear: Wear or bring water shoes for a better grip on slippery surfaces and to protect your feet from sharp rocks or underwater hazards.
  5. Light Snacks and Hydration: Carry light snacks and enough water to stay hydrated throughout your exploration.
  6. Respect Local Guidelines: Follow any local guidelines or regulations in place to protect the natural environment and cultural heritage of the waterfall sites.
  7. Leave No Trace: Practice the “Leave No Trace” principles by taking all your trash with you and minimizing your impact on the natural surroundings.
  8. Camera and Protective Gear: If you’re interested in photography, consider bringing a camera along with protective gear to capture the stunning landscapes. A waterproof camera or a protective case for your smartphone is recommended.
