Judean Desert and Mar Saba Monastery Private Jeep Tour
Book a private tour for an exciting off-road expedition as we escape the urban congestion and head into the Judean Desert on our Jeep excursion.
The Judean Desert offers an intriguing and uncommon glimpse of how our forebears lived. We’ll go off the beaten path into areas primarily populated by Bedouin communities, where we’ll observe their dwellings and livestock.
We’ll explore historic water reservoirs, critical for desert farmers and still functional today. We’ll discuss how the Bedouin herders’ lifestyle has remained unchanged for centuries. A demanding drive will bring us to Mount Azazel. On this holy summit, according to ancient Jewish custom, a scapegoat bearing the community’s transgressions was pushed from a cliff annually on Yom Kippur.
We’ll proceed to the Mar Saba monastery, somewhat hidden from most visitors to Israel due to its relatively inaccessible location. The massive monastery, established more than 1500 years ago, ranks among the world’s oldest continuously inhabited monasteries, surrounded by numerous ancient solitary rock caves. The breathtaking complex is home to Greek Orthodox monks. We’ll return via an off-road route through the winding Kidron valley with its shepherds’ caverns and tiers of historic farming.
The Judean Desert is a vast and historic desert east of Jerusalem, known for its dramatic landscapes and ancient sites. One of its most famous landmarks is Mar Saba Monastery, a Greek Orthodox monastery founded over 1,500 years ago. Built into the cliffs of the Kidron Valley, it is one of the oldest still-inhabited monasteries in the world. The monastery is home to monks who live a secluded life, following centuries-old traditions. Due to its remote location, it remains a hidden gem, offering visitors a unique glimpse into the region’s rich history.
